Deciding on a career comes easy for some, some know from early childhood, some only know in high school and others only decide in matric. As shocking as it may be, I fall under the very last category. I had my mind set on engineering, all up until grade 11. Not necessarily because I loved it but rather because that’s what I thought was the right thing to do. Deep down I have always had the feeling of wanting to be in the health industry, but I never knew what I would like, until a relative told me about the profession; dietetics.

It sparked my interest immediately and so I did as much research as I could and shadowed 2 dieticians; one in the hospital and one in private practice and I was sold! From then on, my interest only grew. The profession was especially close to home because I had and still have relatives affected by lifestyle related chronic diseases. This inspired me to become a dietician to make a difference in prevention and management with regards to these types of diseases and much more.

It goes without saying I really enjoy working with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc. I especially love the private sector because you get to track the progress of each individual and see them improve and work through set backs and achievements. You get to work with them side by side through all of the temptations, goal setting, hiccups, failures and eventual success to see them come out stronger, with more knowledge and better habits. Needless to say, seeing adults with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, metabolic syndrome and renal disease, is my special interest in my line of work.

I would love to continue in the private sector and one day develop my own recipe book.

I am Chezelle, a registered dietician. I completed my degree at the University of Pretoria whereafter I completed my community service year at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and am currently doing my masters degree at Stellenbosch University. I always knew I wanted to go into a profession of health and helping people and realized that it was my calling in high school. I have always been passionate about nutrition and the impact that it has on our health. I became a dietitian to spread awareness on the impact of nutrition and to change people’s perspectives on food. I enjoy walking a nutrition path with people and seeing how their habits, mindset, and bodies change. I enjoy developing recipes and cooking and am very passionate about food. I enjoy travelling and observing different food cultures. Whether it be in the hospital or private practice sector, I have always had compassion towards people and helping to change their lives for the better.
